Calligraphy at Cromford - introduction

This annual summer workshop was organised by Margaret for the first time in 2006, in an attempt to fill the calligraphic void in Derbyshire, where there are few classes for those interested in learning lettering skills.

It is based in the Grade II listed Gothic Warehouse, part of the historic cotton mill complex built by Sir Richard Arkwright in Cromford, near Matlock, Derbyshire in 1771.

Cromford is set in the Peak District National Park, which offers wonderful scenery, a wide variety of outdoor activities, historic buildings to visit and a good range of accommodation from camp sites to good quality hotels.

REPORT/JULY 2008: Lettering as drawing

Imagination and an open mind rather than skills with edged pens were required this year. Creating 'alphabets' from abstract graphic sources and making letters by drawing the negative shapes around & within them were just two of the challenges tackled over the 2 days.

Some comments from participants: '.....enjoyed the forward-looking approach to calligraphy in contrast to more formal penmanship....lovely room to work in....a great location.....nice atmosphere.....loved being free with letters.....freedom to explore letterforms was a treat.....'

A visit from Tina Scott (who has recently taken over sales of speciality papers for calligraphy from Suzanne Murray) on Saturday afternoon was most welcome, as she brought a good selection of stock favourites. There was quite a queue to buy at tea time.

Many thanks to Barry Thomas, who gave a most interesting and entertaining talk after the supper, which showed how an interest and ability in one skill can lead to another. There were slides and photos of his work past and present, as well as actual pieces of his exquisite silverware to look at.

The most favoured topic for 2009 chosen from the group questionnaire is 'The calligraphic landscape'. Watch this space for further information, dates etc.
